Introducing the Camp Whitsett Horse and Packing Summer Camp!

Register for 2012!
The Camp

A one week overnight Horsemanship/Packing Summer Camp experience; the camp takes place in the Golden Trout Wilderness in the Sequoia National Monument. This five day camp session is shared and enjoyed by adventurous outdoor teens….our wonderful guides and Camp Whitsett Staff. Two nights are spent camping at the Golden Trout Pack Station. Three days and two nights are spent camping in tents or under the stars in the wilderness “backcountry” areas where we will practice basic Leave No Trace camping skills.

Why This Camp ROCKS!

This camp session is a perfect combination – horseback riding with backcountry mule packing. Leave No Trace instruction, leadership & team building, horsemanship merit badge, cooking and fly-fishing.

Scout’s Can Earn Badges

Under the guidance of an accredited counselor, scouts can earn Horsemanship Merit Badge.

The Schedule!

Day 1: Arriving at Golden Trout Pack Station, your Guides will greet you and introduce you to
the rest of the Crew. At the lodge, we’ll continue getting to know each other, and enjoy the first
of many delicious and fresh hearty meals.

Then off to the corrals. Camper(s) will be introduced to the horses, which will be specifically
chosen to suit camper(s) comfort level, size and riding ability .Camper(s) will learn how to saddle
and bridle a horse as well as how to pack clothing, tents, food, and gear in pack boxes, pack
bags and ice chests, learning why weight and balance is IMPORTANT. We will practice loading
and unloading onto pack mules and learn why it is IMPORTANT to work together.

Day 2 and 3: During these three days and two nights of camp, the camper(s) will continue
learning basic western horsemanship skills at a beginner level and enjoy an authentic backcountry
pack trip into the mountains. Camper(s) will also be learning how to cook over a campfire!
We will ride through grassy meadows, across crystal clear, spring fed creeks, and over mountain
passes. We will set up camp in an amazing spot. Horses and Mules will wander and graze
in a grassy meadow. Camper(s) will be allowed to advance in their riding skills once skills are
adequately demonstrated; can walk a horse properly, can go to a trot, can trot properly and go
into a canter, etc. There will likely( if conditions allows) be an evening ride and time to practice
using a cowboy lariat for lassoing!

We’ll enjoy a variety of GTWP activities that may include a horseshoe tournament a best dutch
oven dessert etc. Evenings are a favorite time in the mountains; almost all nights here are spent
gathered and socializing around a campfire with bright stars shining overhead.

Day 4: Packing up and Heading Out – GTWP Guides will put you to the test.
Our final yee-haw together brings us back to the Golden Trout Pack Station for a hearty BBQ
dinner.

Day 5: Departing from Golden Trout Pack Station. See you next summer!
